Camo pack condoms for SA soldiers

2013-04-18 00:00

SOUTH Africa’s soldiers have a new camouflaged weapon in their arsenal.

The bright blue, shiny packet with the familiar grey condoms is being replaced by camouflage packaging.

The SA Military Health Service (SAMHS) has confirmed that it is only the packaging that has changed.

Condoms have always been dished out to soldiers, especially those deployed abroad — accompanied by a long lecture on morality — before they board their transport.

The SAMHS says the design is unique to the stock packaged for the defence force.

Soldiers in Namibia have already been receiving camouflage-pack condoms for the last five years.

The Namibian condoms come in three different scents, while the South African versions are unscented.

Soldiers have also long used condoms to cover their rifle barrels in dusty conditions.

The SAMHS said the URL (uniform resource locator) on the packaging, which is intended to lead the user to the defence force’s online Aids awareness programme, is wrong. It would take soldiers to the Masibambisane house-building programme instead, a project through which cheap houses are built and which has nothing to do with the defence force.

The error will be corrected on the next consignment.
