Camps drift: larney litterbugs

2009-10-05 00:00

THEY drink imported beer and drive fancy cars, but they can’t be bothered to put their litter in bins 30 metres away from where they are picnicking.

A resident of Sandhurst, a block of flats that overlooks Camps Drift picnic area, phoned The Witness yesterday to complain about picnickers who regularly leave large amounts of rubbish behind after their visits. The resident, who does not wish to be named, described them as affluent: “They come in nice cars like Audis and BMWs and drink Heineken beers.”

The resident said there were several “massive parties in the area on Saturday” and that “this happens very often. People are allowed to enjoy themselves but they must also look after the environment. Pietermaritzburg is the capital, after all.”

He acknowledged that some people do clean up after themselves, but said the municipality comes only about once a week to clean the area.

“The birds scatter the rubbish and it blows into the river; the fish get affected.”

Photographer Mark Wing said there are five large bins provided by the municipality about 30m away from the litter.
