Cancer crisis at Grey’s

2010-11-16 00:00

BECAUSE the KZN Health Department owes a maintenance company “a lot of money”, the company has refused to fix a radiation machine at Grey’s Hospital’s oncology department. The machine allegedly broke down two weeks ago.

Hospital insiders told The Witness that patient treatment is compromised and no explanation was given to the staff until Thursday last week when the matter was taken up with the HOD, Dr Sibongile Zungu, who is alleged to have said the matter is being sorted out.

A source said, “The company refuses to fix the machine because it is owed a lot of money by the department. It’s not clear how long patients will lose out on treatment and this has brought no joy to either the staff or the patients.

“On Thursday management appealed to Dr Zungu to resolve the matter. Since then we have heard that the service provider will be paid what’s due to it and the machine will get fixed, but we don’t know when,” the source added.

It is not clear how much the department owes the company.

Health Department spokesperson Chris Maxon said he needs to get an explanation of the problem from the hospital.

No further response had been forthcoming by the time of going to press.
