Candelabrum may end up in scrapyard

2012-05-02 00:00

PARISHIONERS of the Italian Church in Scottsville fear that a unique candelabrum and ciborium that have been stolen from the church, may end up in a scrapyard. They are appealing for scrapyard owners to keep a look-out for them.

Congregant Cathy Muraro, whose husband is a curator at the church built by Italian prisoners of war during World War II, said the burglars gained access via the roof a week ago, smashing locks and a secruity gate inside.

“We’re just a special little church and we’ve got little there,” Muraro said.

The thieves stole a free-standing candelabrum, one of the pair handmade for the church in about 1962.

They also took a silver and gold-plated ciborium (communion wine cup), which was bought in Italy in about 1993.

The lidded cup is about 20 cm high. The lid has a cross mounted on it and is engraved with the word Mistica.

A pair of brass candle holders are also missing.

The church has asked anyone that may spot them at any scrapyard to call the police or Livio Tessaro on 082 578 3371.
