Canine distemper: SPCA alert

2012-09-18 00:00

AN outbreak of canine distemper, a viral disease, has led to 30 dogs having to be euthanased at the Pietermaritzburg SPCA.

The first dog with the virus was discovered on September 8. Maureen Vida, SPCA spokesperson, said precautions had been taken to prevent another outbreak.

“We will restrict public access to our kennels. We suspect that someone went into the clinic’s kennel with an infected dog,” she said.

She said the virus was difficult to control because it was airborne, but such outbreaks did not happen often.

“We are very careful. People need to be more careful and get their dogs vaccinated,” she added.
