Canoeing: College takes schools trophy

2013-02-26 00:00

MARITZBURG College has, once again, won the Unlimited Dusi Schools Trophy, proving that they are disputably one of the top canoeing schools in SA.

Travis Wilson was the first U18 paddler to finish at Blue Lagoon, placing him 19th overall — a great result considering that this was hailed as the most competitive Dusi ever with nine former winners contesting the race. Wilson also beat the junior record by just under nine minutes.

Damon Stamp was the second junior home in 28th position overall. It was a good day for the Wilson family as twin brother Tyler was placed third in the U18 category and 37th overall.

In celebration of their 150th birthday, College also had a special batch who all left together. Graeme “Gudjie” Dixon, who matriculated in 1976, completed his 39th consecutive race, an amazing feat and one of the all-time greats of College Canoeing. Seven College Old Boys have, between them, won the Dusi 19 times in both the K1 and K2 categories, while College boys have been frequent winners in the U18 category.
