Canoeing: youngsters dominate

2012-07-25 00:00

AS is common at this stage of the season, the Share-List Property Season Opener on the Upper Umgeni on Sunday was dominated by young paddlers.

The U23 university students Ryan Aikina and Gavin Shuter won the race in a K2 closely followed by the junior mixed double combination of Louis Hattingh and Brittany Petersen with another U18, Banesti Nkoesa, taking the third spot in a K1 just ahead of the leading senior K1 of Shaun Griffin.

The women’s race was won by Abby Adie and Hillary Pitchford in sixth place overall, with U16 Camilla Pennefather in second place in a K1 and veteran Wilma Deyzel snatching third place from sub-veteran Lorna Oliver.

Just over 180 paddlers, including a large number of novices, turned out for the 16 km C Class race hosted by Umzinyathi Canoe Club in sunny and warm conditions.

There is a short break next weekend before the SA K4 Championships on Shongweni Dam on August 4 and 5 and the Tugela 20 races in the Bergville/Winterton area a week later.
