Can’t stop the beat in Durban’s ‘Hairspray’

2010-06-29 00:00

THE musical Hairspray is the tenth annual Rainbow Young Performers Project and will run at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre in Durban from July 2 to July 18.

Hairspray was a cult-classic 1988 comedy film, which showcased the outrageous drag artist Divine. In 2007 a new film version, based on the 2002 Broadway musical, starred John Travolta, Zac Ephron, Michelle Pfeiffer, Queen Latifah and Christopher Walken. This film version was adapted into a stage musical in 2002, which won eight Tony awards including best musical in 2003.

Set in the early sixties, it tells the story of Tracy Turnblad in Maryland in the United States and her dreams of stardom and her defiance of racial segregation.

The coveted role of Edna Turnblad is played by Peter Court in a role made famous by Divine and more recently by Travolta. Her outspoken, optimistic, overweight daughter Tracy is played by Kirsten Dey, who played the title role in Annie in 2007. Tracy’s naïve insistence not to support racial bigotry and her love of dance is the story’s catalyst.

The creative team on the Durban production of Hairspray includes Themi Venturas and Charon Williams Ros. It is supported by Rainbow and co-presented by the Performing Arts Network of South Africa (Pansa).

Hairspray is the latest in nine successful Young Performers musicals, the others being Curtain Up, One Voice, Grease, Oliver, Fiddler on the Roof, The Wiz, Annie, School of Rock SA and Big River.

Booking is at Computicket.
