Capacity crowd for games in electric atmosphere

2009-11-17 00:00

IN front of about a capacity crowd of some 1 000 spectators at the St Charles Indoor Centre on Friday evening, St Charles hosted Maritzburg College in a much-touted contest.

The first quarter started with both sides feeling one another out. College found their rhythm first thus going ahead 14-6. In the second quarter St Charles came out fired up and, showing grit and determination, outplayed College to lead 18 all at half time.

In an electric atmosphere, College went two points ahead and then St Charles scored. College then calmed down and began drawing away to lead 43-32 eventually at the end of the quarter. In the final quarter College carried on from where they had left off and pulled away from the ever vigilant St Charles players.

The young St Charles team were un-able to hold the more experienced Stayers from College and the match ended with a 65-42 win. It was played in a good spirit and was enjoyed by all who witnessed the game.

College Stayers have ended unbeaten and are certainly the strongest unit in midlands basketball. Michaelhouse enjoyed their comprehensive 86-30 win over rivals Hilton. Patrick Howard was once again top scorer for Michaelhouse with 24 points.

St Charles 42 Maritzburg College 65; Michaelhouse 86 Hilton 30; Northwood 60 Westville 74.
