Capsized: NSRI member drowns

2010-03-12 00:00

AN off-duty National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) volunteer drowned when his boat capsized during a skipper training course in Ramsgate yesterday.

According to NSRI Shelley Beach station commander Mark Harlen, Willem Louw and a teenager, who has not been named, were out at sea on a five-metre rigid inflatable rubber-duck for a private skipper training course when the boat capsized.

The skipper, Hilgaard Muller, was trapped under the boat, but managed to swim out to help Louw.

Natal Sharks Board members and Emergency Medical and Rescue Services also responded to the scene to assist.

“Lifeguards initiated cardio pulmonary resuscitation [CPR] efforts on Willem. Advanced life support CPR continued when paramedics arrived on the scene, but after extensive efforts to resuscitate Willem were exhausted, the paramedics declared him dead on the scene,” he said.

The teenager was not injured.
