Car chase: four men arrested after armed robbery on N3

2011-09-27 00:00

A QUICK response by the Pietermaritzburg K9 unit led to the immediate arrest of four men after they committed an armed robbery on the N3 near Mooi River.

On Saturday morning police were tipped off about the men’s escape towards Pietermaritzburg in a white VW Jetta.

Spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said police were lying in wait at the Cedara turn-off.

A high speed chase ensued after the suspect failed to stop when they were flagged down.

Police called for back-up, the N3 Church Street off-ramp was closed off and the suspects fled straight into the roadblock.

While the other three suspects remained in the vehicle, the driver of the getaway vehicle ran away, but was stopped by a police dog. He required treatment for his injuries.

Two unlicensed 9 mm Norinco pistols, an unlicensed Z88 pistol, R2 900 in cash and seven cellphones were recovered.

Jeevan said the suspects, who are believed to be from Eastwood in Pietermaritzburg, have been linked to various armed robberies in the midlands.

It is believed that they pounce on truck drivers who park on the side of the N3 to rest.

The men, aged between 18 and 32, will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court for possession of unlicensed firearms and in the Mooi River and Howick courts on charges of armed robbery shortly.

“The police again appeal to the public especially truck drivers to refrain from stopping or parking on the N3,” said Jeevan.
