Card scam: teenager arrested at the back

2011-10-06 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG police arrested a teenager on suspicion that he was involved in a bank card scam.

The teenager was in church on Sunday when an amount of R5 700 was deposited into his account, and was later withdrawn.

On Monday he went to the bank to inquire about the transactions and while busy with a consultant the police arrived and arrested him.

“On the same Sunday he contacted leaders of the gospel groups which he had played for to ask if they had deposited money into his account, to which they said no.

“When he went to the bank to inquire about the transaction the police arrived and arrested him without asking too many questions,” said his attorney Phumlani Fakude yesterday.

On Tuesday Fakude made representation in the local magistrates court and the teenager was released without being charged.

“If the police had done their work properly my client wouldn’t have spent the night in police cells. For that reason we are considering legal action against the police,” said Fakude.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed the arrest and said the teenager was released on Tuesday due to insufficient evidence.
