Carpenter tells his own storey

2015-01-05 00:00

A CARPENTER living on the side of the N3 near Howick has defied convention and built himself a double-storey house — out of wood.

The house-proud Mlungisi Zuma lives in a two-floor dwelling that took him about two weeks to create.

His shack — covering a space of 21m² — is based on the style of a modern suburban double-storey house.

And like a true patriot he has three South African flags adorning the property, including one that covers an entire wall facing the road.

Zuma, who is in his thirties and has been living in the Zuzokuhle informal settlement for seven years, said he uses the top floor of his home to “relax and get fresh air”.

“My brothers and I are all carpenters and we build homes for families in Zuzokuhle to make a living,” said Zuma.

Currently living alone with his wife and children living in Mpendle, he said he started carpentry from a “very young age”.

“My family would pick up work from building contractors. We are self taught,” he said. His neighbour Adam Buthelezi told The Witness that Zuma is a creative thinker who’s full of ideas and likes to challenges himself to “new things everyday” using the little resources that he has.

“His inspiration is driven by his passion for politics and art. He is the kind of man that sees a design in town and comes back and works on it. We learn a lot from him as young carpenters in this place because that’s the only skill that can put food on the table for us,” he said.
