Cars in the Park in jeopardy after municipality blunders

2010-05-18 00:00

THE staging of one of Pietermaritzburg’s most eagerly anticipated annual events may be in jeopardy following a blunder by the Msunduzi Municipality.

The organiser of Cars in the Park, Ty Terblanche, told The Witness yesterday that he will certainly not organise the event in the city again unless the municipality’s parks and recreation division shapes up.

Terblanche said the municipality failed to prepare facilities adequately on time. He said R6 000 is paid to the municipality for the event on the assumption that grass will be cut and litter collected in the Alexandra Park, where the event has been held annually for the past 34 years.

The grass was not cut on time, he said, and parks and recreation told them that their brush cutters did not have petrol.

Terblanche said he put in R1 000 to fuel the brush cutters for grass cutting to resume, adding that the problems were compounded by a lack of electricity at various plug points and no water in the ablution facilities at the restuarant in the Oval Cricket Stadium.

Parks and recreation director Steven Naick admitted that fuel for their brush cutters was purchased for them.

He added that parks workers cut the grass before the event and that the park has not been so clean in a long time.
