Carter go down fighting to Ixopo

2013-07-30 00:00

A PHYSICAL encounter saw 10-man Ixopo High School walk away with a 1-0 victory in their soccer game against Carter High School in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday.

The game, played out at a frantic pace, could have ended up as a heavy defeat for the Cartarians had it not been for a number of good saves from keeper Tufayl Chohan.

But Chohan was also to blame for the soft goal conceded by his side when he came out for a ball he shouldn’t have, leaving an empty net for Ixopo captain Mnqobi Mnguni to score.

Both sides struggled to get forward with the ball going wayward in midfield a number of occasions.

Carter’s captain Tristan Singh could have levelled things 10 minutes into the second half when he found himself with space in the box. But, with only the keeper to beat, he missed the ball completely and it was cleared by the Ixopo defenders.

Carter had another opportunity to equalise nearer the end when striker Themba Ndlovu found himself with space in the box. He lost the ball, but managed to recover it and put in a cross at the far post where he had two players waiting. But, the ball was well intercepted by Ixopo keeper Bongumusa Shozi.

The game then turned into a rough affair that saw reckless challenge after reckless challenge and finally resulted in the only dismissal of the game when Ixopo left back Wonga Dikwa was given his marching orders.

After the game, Ixopo manager Sizanenhlanhla Zincume said it was a tough game, but he was happy with the performance of a team missing a number of regulars. “Our backline was tight. It was our second win in two games for the season,” Zincume told The Witness.

Carter coach Brice Petersen said he too was happy with the performance of his players, except for the result. “I couldn’t have asked more from my players. They did what I asked of them, and they did well. They just conceded a silly goal,” he said.

Carter next play against Howick, while Ixopo take on Alexandra High School.
