Cascades cinema to close on August 13

2009-08-06 00:00

FILM FANS will have one less venue to watch movies at when Pietermaritzburg’s NuMetro Cascades closes its doors for the last time on August 13.

The closure is a blow to Bollywood fans as the cinema is currently the only one in the city that regularly screens movies made by the Indian film industry.

It was also one of the few places where you could watch South African films, like the 2009 releases Finding Lenny and Tornado.

The reason for the closure is believed to be the ever-dwindling numbers of patrons — although this was not confirmed by NuMetro’s Johannesburg head office at the time of going to press.

As for what will happen to the staff, NuMetro Cascades manager Selvarani Naiker, who has been at the cinema since it opened some 15 years ago, told The Witness she and other staff members have been offered the chance to move to a new NuMetro cinema opening in Amanzimtoti.

No special event has been planned to mark the closing of the cinema.

The cinema will continue its screenings of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Kambakkht Ishq, Knowing and Brüno until August 13.
