Case opened after tow driver’s death

2014-07-10 00:00

A CASE of murder has been opened after a tow truck operator died, following an allegedly brutal assault with a hockey stick in Hilton.

Police yesterday said they were unable to confirm that the assault occurred as a result of rivalry between tow truck operators.

Virendhra Dewcharan (30) was beaten on the night of June 18 and died in hospital. His funeral took place yesterday.

Reliable sources alleged that he had been at an accident scene when he was assaulted. One source said he had heard that the argument between rival tow companies at the scene “got out of hand”.

“There are fights and arguments everyday in the breakdown game, but at the end of the day we all work together,” the source said.

Police said yesterday that the motive for the killing was unknown and that the case is still under investigation.

Captain Thulani Zwane said no one had yet been arrested.

Tow truck drivers yesterday gathered together to form a procession to the cemetery. Dennis Stanford of Mac’s Towing told The Witness that around 15 towing vehicles from different companies in Hilton, Howick, Pietermaritzburg and Richmond paid their respects to Dewcharan.
