Cash-for-kidneys: Netcare stands by accused

2011-12-07 00:00

NETCARE Ltd is fully supportive of its two employees, Lindy Dickson and Melanie Azor, who were implicated in the cash-for-kidney scandal in which Brazilian nationals were allegedly recruited to sell their organs to wealthy Israelites.

The two stand accused with four medical specialists for performing the operations at Netcare St Augustine hospital about eight years ago.

The accused filed papers in the Durban’s Commercial Crimes Court on Monday to have charges against them dismissed.

Through its spokesperson Martina Nicholson, Netcare said the institution is sympathetic towards the plight of both employees who at the time were qualified nurses working as transplant co-ordinators at the hospital.

“We have been assured by both Miss Dickson and Mrs Azor that they were not involved in any wrongdoing and that they did not commit any of the offences with which they have been charged,” said the Netcare statement.

The matter was postponed to the end of February 2012 for the state to respond to the documents filed by the accused.
