Cash-strapped SABC turns off the champagne

2009-06-22 00:00

CAPE TOWN — The champagne fountain has dried up completely.

The SABC, which used to host glamourous parties where French champagne flowed freely, is now scrapping all plans for glitzy events.

While the SABC’s presence at the Durban July race meeting used to be marked by an exclusive marquee tent and plenty of champagne, the SABC will be absent from this year’s event.

This is clearly a radical shift from the SABC’s presence at the J&B Met tournament in February, where guests were treated to French champagne, expensive gifts and caviar snacks, served on silver trays.

The SABC’s top management would travel to these events in style and stay in luxury accommodation.

The SABC’s typical glitz and glamour was also absent from the Royal Show, and the broadcaster’s presence was hardly detectible at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival.

A countrywide Isidingo tour has been cancelled, along with SABC1’s annual Stars of Mzanzi event.

The 31st Loerie awards are scheduled to take place in September. The SABC is one of the main sponsors. It remains to be seen whether the broadcaster will also cancel their support of this event.
