Catch century-old rivalry when Collegians take on Varsity tonight

2014-04-24 00:00

ONE match-up to watch in Fidelity Security Premier Division action this evening is the much-anticipated Maritzburg derby between Collegians and Varsity.

The century-old rivalry always stirs up passions. Club pride will be paramount in this 8 pm encounter on Woodburn’s number two field between two sides whose quest for Moor Cup success received a dent in the opening round just under a fortnight ago. The Impi of UKZN Pietermaritzburg were downed by newly promoted Amanzimtoti under canny head coach Jeff Harper while PMB Collegians under wily head coach Carel Nel held the ambitious Varsity College line-up for a considerable part of their clash.

The collisions will be fierce, the rugby uncompromising, and even the most jaded of supporters used to watching rugby on the television set in the lounge will find their pulses quicken if they make the effort to get down to Woodburn.

Another muscle-up to savour is the clash between perennial champions Collegians Rovers and Crusaders at Ranleigh Crescent in Durban North. It would take a brave man to bet against a comfortable Rovers victory. Toti will be looking to build on their first-round win when they host Varsity College, but it will be a big ask to expect them to necessarily win this one, while Durban Collegians make the journey to Empangeni and a date with Zululand Rhinos.
