Caterers piling on the party

2013-07-06 00:00

IT’s the place to be and be seen.

The Vodacom Durban July is one of the biggest social events in KwaZulu-Natal, attracting punters, VIPs, fashionistas, wannabes and party animals.

Durban’s Greyville Racecourse will not only host them, but entertain them for almost 12 straight hours.

It is up to organisers Gold Circle and a variety of caterers to make sure there is enough food and beverages to feed and water the throng.

An estimated 65 000 people are expected to attend this year. For the caterers stocking the hospitality marquees, preparations started early in the week.

Staff worked 11-hour shifts on Thursday and yesterday. This morning they started at 1 am to ensure everything was ship-shape.

“There are a lot of people to feed, and we have to make sure that we don’t run out. Fortunately, the Durban July has never run out of food or drink in the past. We have never even run out of alcohol, and we won’t this year. There is plenty for everyone,” Gold Circle’s Gill Simpkins told Weekend Witness.

Gold Circle will be dishing up 2 200 kg of meat, 300 kg of crayfish and three-quarters of a ton of chicken.

Alcohol on ice ready for thirsty punters consists of 18 000 beers, 2 500 bottles of spirits and 900 bottles of wine.
