Caught on camera, the bold crook who stole a car

2009-05-14 00:00

CAMERA footage at a local car dealership shows how a man simply walked into their yard and drove out in a car worth R250 000 yesterday afternoon — no paperwork, no payment.

“He knew exactly what he was doing,” said Shameer Akoo, the owner of Aksons Inspecta Car, as he played back the surveillance tapes.

“Watch him, watch him. He just walked into our workshop and drove off with the car.”

The 10-minute video shows a well-dressed man walking into the back yard of the dealership, standing around the car that he would later drive away, walking in and out of the dealership’s storage units and bathrooms and then jumping into the white Toyota and driving off.

“It was a Toyota Fortuner, but it was very unfortunate for us,” quipped Akoo.

Tony Suchitanund, the manager of the dealership’s storage unit — where the man allegedly took the keys from the counter — said that when he spoke to the suspect, he said he was waiting for a sales representative to come and help him.

“He came into the storage unit and said he was waiting for a sales rep,” he said. “I told him that customers are not allowed in the yard ... after a while, I went to the front to find the sales rep and he ran to the car and left.”

It is apparent from the video footage that the suspect had studied Suchitanund’s movements and kept avoiding others in the yard.

Akoo said it is obvious the man has a gun.

“That’s a gun. Can you see it?” said Akoo. “That hump there.”

Akoo said he quickly notified the authorities and appealed for anyone with information to come forward. He offered a reward for the recovery of the vehicle.

“If anyone came help us find the car, we will give them R20 000,” he said.
