Cedara first with future farmers

2012-05-30 00:00

TWO Bovelder animals bred by Sean de Jager of Dundee and raised by students at Cedara College of Agriculture were crowned champions at the Royal Agricultural Show.

They won the commercial animal on the hoof and reserve champion commercial animal on the hoof during the commercial steer classes.

The college’s second-year students were responsible for raising the feedlot animals between January and May with the aim of competing at the show.

The steer project forms part of the students’ beef production one curriculum.

Cedara’s third-year students will show Herefords, some bred and raised at the college, in the regional championships.

Cedara also won the JR Brewitt Floating Trophy and a Royal Show medallion for the best group of four steers class.

These Herefords were bred by Lu Kobus, an animal production lecturer at Cedara.

In the Future Farmers’ competition, the best handler on show was Jesse Wilson, a second-year student at Cedara, with fellow student JD van Zyl the runner-up.

The best group of three was won by Cedara’s James Foster, Justin Connor and Tiaan Lochner with Brian Mbande, Lunga Madondo and Sean Johnson, also of Cedara, in second spot.
