Cele: Thuli not God, as ANC attacks

2014-04-07 00:00

PUBLIC Protector Thuli Madonsela “is not God”.

Several ANC leaders and government officials said this yesterday, some even calling for Madonsela to lose her job over her findings about President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla home.

ANC NEC member Bheki Cele told a Youth League meeting in Mamelodi that Madonsela had not fallen from heaven, as some seemed to think.

Cele was mentioned in Madonsela’s report, in his previous role as national police commissioner.

Cele said the ANC created Madonsela’s office as part of its fight against corruption.

“Therefore, the person of Thuli Madonsela must be separated from the office of public protector. We support and respect the office,” he said.

“Thuli Madonsela is just a person. People are carrying on as she was Jesus of Jerusalem. She isn’t,” he said.

Deputy minister of Monitoring and Evaluation in the Presidency Obed Bapela said Madonsela “must, as ANC deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte says, rather keep quiet”. He added, “The best thing for her to do is to rather resign. Then she can stand as the DA’s presidential candidate.”

Buti Manamela, secretary-general of the Young Communist League, said Madonsela is guilty of violating the Constitution and undermining Parliament. “We will reveal how she abuses the law, and is misused by the DA and other small parties.”
