Celtic go shopping abroad for top striker

2012-12-27 00:00

BLOEMFONTEIN Celtic are in the market for a top striker to strengthen their ambitions of a top four finish at the end of the season, says coach Clinton Larsen.

Celtic are looking at the foreign market with two of their allotted five slots for foreigners this season still open.

The month-long transfer window opens on January 1.

“We have a small squad, so some more competition would be a good, especially in certain departments,” Larsen told supersport.com.

“We are eyeing someone for the top striker spot, a player who can give us 15 to 20 goals per season.

“But these types of players are few and far between. It is just a question of keeping looking,” he said.

Larsen said his team’s ambition was not to only finish in the top eight this season: he believes they can go as high as fourth in the standings.

“We believe we have a squad that is good enough; we just need to be more consistent,” he added.

“We need of a run of good results in games so that we can be up there and compete with the top teams. But the games are all very difficult.”

Celtic have already achieved one ambition for the season by winning the Telkom Knockout earlier this month, beating big-spending Mamelodi Sundowns in the final.

But now Larsen wants them to concentrate on the league and get themselves up among the front runners.

Celtic’s highest ever finish was third place in 1985. Since the formation of the Premier Soccer League, the club’s best return was fifth in 2010 in Larsen’s debut season as coach. Last season they finished eighth.
