Centenary flame in Midlands

2012-04-26 00:00

THE ANC’s centenary flame is going to be in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands today — Freedom Day. The flame will be arriving from the lower South Coast region and the ceremonial procession will begin with a mini rally at Heroes’ Acre in Mpofana.

This will be followed by a motorcade through Lidgetton. The flame will be taken to former president Nelson Mandela’s capture site in Lions River and then to Heroes’ Acre in Mpophomeni where a mini rally will be held.

There will be a stopover at St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Cedara. Moses Mabhida region secretary Supa Zuma said this was to acknowledge the role played by the church when the priests and brothers played a pivotal role in the struggle in the Midlands during the Sarmcol strike and during the violence of the 1980s.

Zuma said that shortly after the ANC was unbanned and the organisation could not get a venue to meet, the brothers gave up their rooms and allowed the ANC to meet at St Joseph’s Scholasticate.

The programme will end in Pietermaritzburg’s northern suburbs where the centenary flame will be taken to centres where struggle stalwarts like Dr Chota Motala, Dr Vasu Chetty and A.S. Chetty gathered.

At 6 pm there will be a public lecture on the ANC centenary at the KZN Blind and Deaf Society Hall at the corner of Newholmes Road and Olympia Way. Zuma said the activities throughout the day and the lecture in the evening would offer the public the opportunity to witness the freedom flame.
