Centre highlights Zulu nation’s role

2014-07-18 00:00

THE Zulu nation’s role in the county’s liberation and bringing peace to the province will be showcased in a new heritage centre in Cato Manor.

Yesterday, King Goodwill Zwelithini, flanked by eThekwini Mayor James Nxumalo, gave the project at the Ukhumbane Cultural and Heritage centre the nod.

It will house a museum that will acknowledge and celebrate the role played by the Zulu Kingdom.

The mayor and king observed the proceedings yesterday as the sod was turned for the next phase of the project. Senior officials attended the sod-turning ceremony to assess the progress on the project.

The eThekwini Municipality has invested R75 million in the construction for the second phase “in an effort to revive the Cato Manor area by preserving the people’s cultural heritage as well as boost tourism”, said spokesperson Tozi Mthethwa.

The first phase of the project included the burial site of the remains of the late mother of King Goodwill Zwelithini and Queen Thomozile kaNdwandwe Zulu.

Mthethwa said people in the area were deeply wounded by forced removals during apartheid years, hence the move to restore the heritage of Cato Manor.
