Chabane also a musician with a mission

2015-03-16 00:00

COLLINS Chabane was a musician with an accomplished repertoire of traditional instruments, two albums and a mission to use music to bridge cultures and inspire.

The South African Music Rights Organisation (Samro) honoured his contribution to South African music in 2010.

An interview with Chabane in the magazine Samro Notesnoted Chabane had issued the two albums with the group “Movement” between 1999 and 2005, but then his duties for the ANC started to take all his time.

Chabane said musicians played a important role in helping form the moral values of a society. He was 17 when he joined the ANC and he spent years in exile. He was incarcerated on Robben Island from 1985 to 1990, where he had the time to develop his latent music talents, starting with the harmonica.

He entertained his fellow prisoners, but not Nelson Mandela, who had already been transferred to a prison on the mainland in 1982.

Chabane later added the Zimbabwean string instrument the mbira to his repertoire and formed the group “Movement” with Zimbabwean artist, Bezil Makombe. They issued their debut album Seke VS Xikundu in 1999. This was followed by Xai-Xai.

The two albums aimed to integrate the Shona, Tsonga and Venda cultures by making music that used traditional instruments from these cultures.
