Change in Zim

2008-12-24 00:00

The Reverend Allan Boesak may not have led an exemplary life, but there’s no denying his intelligence and the fact that every so often he says something that makes sense. Most recently, giving his opinion of the situation in Zimbabwe, he commented that the only way the world might be rid of Robert Mugabe is for Zimbabweans to rise up and topple him themselves. Although external disapproval of Mugabe is mounting, and although many countries have indicated a willingness to participate in his removal, no outside interference, including military intervention, will bring about the desired result.

Zimbabweans have to care about their country and their future enough to want, passionately, to be free of Mugabe, and to be prepared to do what it takes, even though the way will probably be a bloody one. Can they — do they want to — transform their current passive victim mind-set into the essential energetic ardour? If they can, they may be astonished at the alacrity and humanitarian warmth with which the rest of the world (except, perhaps, for South Africa) is ready to provide help and support of every kind.
