Changes to Inland for SA Airways Challenge

2009-01-12 00:00

ONLY one KZN Premier League match took place on Sunday, with Standard trouncing Orientals by nine wickets at the new Standard Cricket Ground (SCG) at Wanderers Club.

Meanwhile, the KZN Inland selectors have chosen a 13-man squad for the SA Airways Challenge three-day and 45-over matches against North West at the City Oval in Alexandra Park from Thursday to Sunday.

There are a number of changes, with the most notable being the unavailability of Andre van Vuuren for this vital round.

“We have had to leave Andre out as he is heavily committed at work at the moment. We understand this and he is still up for selection for forthcoming matches should his workload ease,” Inland manager of playing affairs and selector Garry Hampson told The Witness yesterday.

Apart from his qualities as a batsman and bowler, the super-fit Van Vuuren will be missed as much for the experience and fight he brings to the team.

“With Andre out it has changed the balance of the team and has opened the door for Glen Addicott, who has been deserving of a chance for a while,” Hampson said.

Addicott has been top of the averages for three seasons and his maturity, coupled with powerful stroke play, should stand him in good stead. Kyle Nipper also comes in after fine performances at the helm of Standard.

“Devon Ryland replaces Brendan Govender, as we need the bowling back up,” Hampson said.

“Devon is a youngster from Northern Districts who has bowled with decent pace in club games and will fill the change bowler’s role. Ollie Humphries is also not available after having his wisdom teeth out, so Andrew Tweedie takes his spot.”

A big plus for Inland is the return of KZN Dolphins’ all-rounder Morne van Vuuren.

The match represents a challenge, as Potchefstroom-based North West are top of the pool, having won two from two against Namibia.
