Chaos as police clash with protesting taxi drivers

2014-07-31 00:00

CHAOS reigned as running battles between police and taxi drivers in Pinetown yesterday left scores injured.

The clashes saw heavily armed riot police engaging taxi drivers in violent confrontations for most of the day.

Hundreds of irate taxi drivers stoned Metro Police officers in the morning — a backlash for the second day against a by-law crackdown.

Metro Police officers impounded several taxis on Monday, and stepped up the issuing of fines to errant drivers.

As police officers fired pepper spray canisters and rubber bullets into the rowdy crowd, protesters burnt tyres and barricaded roads in the central business district.

Eleven people were injured in the exchange, most of whom were taxi commuters caught in the crossfire.

One taxi passenger had taken cover in the rank when salvos of tear gas were fired into the crowd.

Seizures crippled the unnamed woman and she was carried to safety by journalists and bystanders.

She was in a critical condition when she was rushed to the R. K. Khan Hospital in Chatsworth.

As taxi drivers ran riot, they looted a cargo truck and several stores in Pinetown’s Hill Street.
