Chaos as protesters block road

2014-07-11 00:00

RESIDENTS from Umdloti, Tongaat and Ballito heading to work yesterday morning were literally stopped in their tracks as service delivery protesters blocked off the M4 parallel to Genazzano Road.

About 300 residents from the Thuthukani township allegedly burnt rubbish and tyres and threw stones at police vehicles. Police dispersed protesters with rubber bullets and teargas.

Residents of the informal settlement just above the M4 said their angry response was because they were told on Wednesday that they would no longer be getting the low-cost housing they were expecting to receive.

Five protesters had been arrested for public violence and they are expected to appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court soon.

George Pienaar, a resident, said they “will not rest until they receive housing”. The group has threatened more service delivery protests.

Jeeva Pillay, the chairperson of the Tongaat Civic Association, said that they supported the protesters as they have been living in unacceptable conditions for close to 30 years.

Local councillor Mxolisi Kenneth Ndzimbomvu could not be reached for comment last night.
