Charity golf: ‘this is my hero’ says Player

2012-11-26 00:00

GOLFING legend Gary Player has thrown his support behind “Wings and Wishes”, a charity that collects air-miles from frequent travellers to transport critically-ill children to receive specialist medical care at distant medical facilities.

The charity “Wings and Wishes” was started by staff at the Coca-Cola Sabco bottling company in Port Elizabeth. It is one of the two charities that will benefit from the Gary Player Invitational (GPI), presented by Coca-Cola, which took place over the weekend at the Zimbali County Club.

The charity asks frequent fliers to donate their air-miles to the needy who have to travel for medical reasons.

Player was delighted to meet one of the people who benefited from the “Wings and Wishes” charity — Rushane Malgas, who spent the morning on the golf course with his golfing hero.

Rushane has lupus, a life-threatening illness, and the charity flew him to Cape Town for treatment, accompanied by his mother.

Player said: “We tend to make mountains out of our troubles, but this brave young man accompanied me on the cart during my round of golf this morning and he never stopped smiling. I walked off the course and said this is my hero,” — Witness Reporter.
