Charity run backfires

2013-06-04 00:00

A DISAPPOINTED Edeline Mutize failed to make it to the start of the official Comrades Marathon after attempting to run the marathon twice back-to-back.

Mutize planned to run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on Saturday evening, and then start the official race with all the runners on Sunday morning. Unfortunately, her back-up car packed up on Friday and needed four days to sort out, by which time the Comrades would be over.

The purpose of the back-to-back race was to raise funds for the organisation Newkidz on the Block, which aims to support orphans by building children homes and shelters for abused women in communities in Cape Town.

CEO of Newkidz on the Block, Hilda de Beer was saddened that Mutize couldn’t run, and said: “Edeline was very disappointed that she couldn’t run. She trained so hard, but there was no way she could do it without a support team.” De Beer is sure that next year Mutize will complete the task.
