Charity the winner in Mpumalanga man’s record braai

2012-09-25 00:00

THE new world braai record is 71 hours and six minutes.

It was set yesterday, “national braai day”, by Nando Fraser in Graskop, Mpumalanga.

The previous record, for a single person keeping at least five items continuously on a braai fire, was 62 hours.

Fraser tried to break that by at least 10 hours, falling a bit short.

“I am disappointed not to make 72 hours, but the medics told me I had to stop, because my blood pressure was very high and my nose was bleeding,” he told sister paper Beeld at about 1 pm yesterday.

Sitting with his feet up, he said he wanted to bring people together around the braai fire, and feed needy children.

“I braaied about 220 kg of meat in four days and 1 000 children got food,” he said.

The braaied meat was sold to the public, who also donated toys and clothes for three children’s charities, which used the money raised to feed the children.

Fraser said he had more than met his goals, and collected about 12 sacks of clothes.

Asked whether he would try to break the record again next year, he laughed: “Ask me in a couple of weeks!”
