THE Mountain Splendour Mania weekend was a resounding success with a large turnout, perfect weather, excellent facilities, an exhilirating single track and breathtaking views.

Every campsite in the resort was booked for the weekend with many spectators visiting the central Drakensberg region for the first time.

On Saturday the first race for the weekend was the five-kilometre trail run, 20 km MTB, five-kilometre trail run multisport race. Charl Keet (Land Rover Gear USN) led from start to finish to take a comfortable win. In second place was Donovan Jackson and third Gary Green.

Su Erskine was the first women home in fifth place overall, with Jacolene May finishing second and Shantal Labuschagne third.

A 10 km fun night ride that evening was the highlight for many. Tyronne White (Land Rover Gear USN) and Amy-Jane Mundy (Jeep) both secured comfortable wins in the men’s and women’s categories.

On Sunday the 20 km Intermediate and 40 km Classic MTB events started together and followed the same route for about 10 km before the 40 km riders were sent off on a more demanding route with some tricky technical sections.

Keet, White and Jackson set the pace in the beginning stages of the 40 km race while Adrian Damant and Neville Schuit duelled throughout the 20 km race. Keet showed his strength on the hills by pulling away from White and Jackson on a steep single-track climb. He was never challenged again and recorded his second victory of the weekend.

Damant won the 20 km race by five seconds over Schuit with Shannon Robertson third overall.

As expected, Mundy cruised to a healthy victory in the women’s 40 km race. Second and third were separated by a few seconds with Belinda van der Riet getting the upper hand over Jacolene May. In the 20 km race Shantal Labuschagne took the win ahead of Tracy Ibbetson and Michelle Crichton.
