Charred remains: ex held

2009-02-19 00:00

Twenty-three-year-old Kalisha Rajcomar appeared briefly before a Pietermaritzburg magistrate in connection with the murder of her ex-boyfriend, Sandesh Poorun, whose burnt body was found along the Table Mountain road in Cramond last week.

Meanwhile, police detectives from Mountain Rise yesterday afternoon arrested a 26-year-old man alleged to have been involved in the murder.

The man was arrested soon after he was discharged from a local hospital where he had been recovering from a suspected overdose of tablets at the weekend.

Police said the man is expected to appear in court today.

Rajcomar was arrested in connection with Poorun’s murder on Tuesday and was only expected to appear in court yesterday. But The Witness learned that the police rushed her before Pietermaritzburg magistrate Paul van Dongen on Tuesday afternoon.

A member of the public who observed her in court told The Witness yesterday the young mother had appeared “frightened”.

She was not asked to plead to any charges and her case was postponed until February 24 to give her an opportunity to appoint a legal representative.

The Witness has learned that Rajcomar and Poorun were involved in a relationship that resulted in the birth of a girl, now aged about 11 months.

There is speculation that since Rajcomar’s recent marriage, friction had developed between them concerning the child.

The exact circumstances of Poorun’s death are still under investigation and police have not yet made known the findings of a postmortem carried out on his body.

Indications are that he was murdered elsewhere and that his body was taken to Cramond, dumped and then set alight.

He disappeared on February 7 this year, allegedly after receiving a telephone call while he was socialising with a friend in a local pub.

His family searched for him, to no avail, and said attempts to reach him on his cellphone were fruitless as they could only access his voicemail.

Poorun’s body was in fact discovered on the Table Mountain Road last week, but it was not until several days later that police made the connection to the missing Poorun.

By Tuesday, the body had been positively identified as that of Poorun and Rajcomar was charged with the murder.
