Chicken and two teddies please, hold the mince

GEORGE — Four years old and picky with it is Tequila, a South American female jaguar who refuses beef but eats chicken and refuses to go to sleep without her two teddy bears.

Tequila has been raised at the Jukani centre outside Plettenberg Bay since 2010.

Jurg Olsen of Jukani told how her pickiness with food had started when she was a cub.

He said they followed the normal routine of feeding her a milk formula and later weaning her with a mixture of mince in the milk. But Tequila refused to eat anything containing beef. She was introduced to small pieces of chicken at six to eight weeks and and has been crazy about it ever since.

Olsen said the big cat is ready to throw up is she as much as smells beef. “She drools and it is not from hunger.

“On top of this, she gets very peeved and lets you know all about it.

“She won’t even eat chicken if it touched beef,” said Olsen.

At night, Tequila will only sleep when she has her two favourite teddy bears. She allows only Olsen to enter her den while she is in it. “She will quietly be sucking on her teddies, which she has had since she was a cub,” Olsen added. “I will also talk to her.”

Tequila’s best mates are two puma females, Inca and Indiana, and a male Bengal tiger, Juka.

“All of them are in separate camps but they visit through the fence,” said Olsen.

He said jaguars are solitary, opportunistic hunters who will follow their prey or lay in wait in an ambush.
