Chicken farm: cleaner dies in mixing machine

2012-06-14 00:00

A 28-YEAR-OLD temporary cleaner was killed in a mixing machine at a chicken farm in Hammarsdale on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane, confirmed an inquest docket had been opened following the death of Ntokozo Mntungwa in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Group human resource and corporate affairs director Stephen Heath said Rainbow Chickens was deeply saddened to report the death of one of the cleaning staff at its Hammarsdale plant.

He said that just after 2 am the plant manager received a call from one of the maintenance staff informing him that there had been an accident. He was on the scene a short while later, by which time the police had been summoned.

“Details are sketchy at the moment. No one witnessed the actual accident as the plant was not operational at the time and there were only cleaning and maintenance staff on site.

“It appears, however, that the cleaner was working in an area on his own when two other cleaners heard him call out.

“Two colleagues found him at the bottom of a large mixing machine. The machine was not running at the time” said Heath.
