Child plays with gun, dies

2014-11-17 00:00

A THREE-YEAR-OLD toddler was shot dead while playing with his father’s licensed pistol at their home in Limit Hill near Ladysmith yesterday morning.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the little boy had somehow got hold of the gun and shot himself in the mouth in the bedroom.

The child’s mother was busy in the kitchen at the time of the incident, which happened at about 11.20 am.

“An inquest has been opened at this stage until it can be determined how the child got access to the gun,” said Naicker.

He was not in a position to release the parents’ identity or that of the child at this stage.
