Child porn ring: Bail application of ex-cop from Durban denied

2011-12-22 00:00

WELKOM — A former police officer from Durban, who was arrested for his alleged involvement in a widespread child pornography network, will remain in custody after his bail application failed in the court.

André Stephen Botha (38) must appear in court again on January 24.

The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has also indicated it wants to become involved with the investigation.

Magistrate Botsile Lefenya conceded to a plea by Charmaine Labuschagne, the control prosecutor for Dedicated Court: Sexual Offences and Related Matters in Welkom, that it was in the public’s interest to refuse bail for Botha.

A family friend, whose home in Welkom was given as a permanent address should bail be granted, also indicated that the home will no longer be available to Botha after Labuschagne explained the scope of the charges against Botha.

He is allegedly the mastermind behind the child porn ring that distributed shocking material over MXit involving kids as young as five years old.

No charges have yet been laid against Botha, who is the father of a 19-year-old girl in the U.S. and a five-year-old boy in Durban.
