Child rape: KZN man gets life

2014-04-04 00:00

TRUCK driver Moonsamy Arumugum (38) was sentenced to life yesterday for the abduction and rape of a six-year-old girl in March.

“This will serve as deterrent to those who prey on children who cannot defend themselves,” said KZN provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.

Arumgum was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape, 10 years for assault, and three years for abduction.

The six-year-old victim was returning home from school in the Clairwood area on March 10 when she went missing. After a frantic search she was found just after 3 am the following day in the bush along Edwin Swales Drive.

The child said she had been kidnapped by a truck driver who dragged her into the bush, tied her up and raped her. It is alleged he thereafter assaulted her with a brick on her head and left her in the bush.

After interviewing the child, the Brighton Beach Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit began their investigation by interviewing all trucking companies in the area.

On March 15 the suspect’s employer found items belonging to the victim in one of his trucks. Police questioned the suspect at his place of employment in Phoenix where he confessed to the crime.
