Child rape: man arrested in midnight raid

2009-10-16 00:00

A MAN has been arrested in the Eastern Cape in connection with the rape of a nine-year-old girl whose ear was bitten off by her attacker at uMzinto on the south coast last week.

The uMzinto family violence, child protection and sexual offences (FCS) unit commander, Captain Kishore Giani, led a team of detectives in the investigation. They learnt that the man, who lived at Esperanza, but was formerly from Flagstaff in the Eastern Cape, had gone to a relative’s house there.

“The FCS members surprised him at midnight on a Sunday when they stormed into the relative’s house and placed him under arrest,” said south coast police spokesman Captain Vincent Pandarum.

The man appeared in court yesterday.

Pandarum said the police are investigating the possibility that the suspect may be linked to other rapes in the area.

Meanwhile, the child has had reconstructive surgery on her ear, which the attacker bit when she tried to scream to attract the attention of her mother, who was searching and calling for her during the attack.
