Children see N2 road ragebrawl

2014-10-07 00:00

TWO men faced off in an alleged roadside brawl on the N2 near the Westwood Mall on Sunday — the latest in a string of road rage incidents.

This as a Chatsworth man appeared in court facing a murder charge, after shooting another motorist six times last week.

The weekend’s incident developed from vulgar hand gestures into a heated exchange of words, and eventually saw both drivers pulling off the road.

Ballito resident Marc Lagane, who witnessed the episode, said that he saw the driver of a luxury SUV attacking another man.

“Both cars were parked at the side of the road and the [driver of the SUV] was attacking the other driver, hitting him and even throwing rocks at his car,” he said.

He said the spat took place in full view of children in the alleged attacker’s car. “It was disgusting.”

Lagane diligently recorded the number plate of the vehicle, and The Witness traced its owner, Mark Clayton.

Taken aback, Clayton insisted that he hadn’t been using his car, and that “a friend” had used it to collect him from the airport and that he knew nothing of the incident.

After checking with the driver, Clayton conceded that there had been an argument.

“The guy is 19-years-old and he had used my car because I didn’t want to leave it at the airport. I am also really disappointed because he didn’t tell me anything about it,” he said.

“I asked him about it and he said that the other guy had braked hard in front of him and then had shown him an obscene gesture. He then swore at my friend who retaliated and then he said that the other guy motioned him to pull over.”

Clayton said that his driver denied assaulting the man, or hurling debris. He would not identify the driver, who he said had declined to comment to the press.

“Obviously it was a really stupid thing to do and now he is really worried. He should never have stopped the car and if anything should have driven straight to the police station and reported it.”

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said that no case had been registered.

Last week a motorist was killed near Chatsworth Stadium, where an argument descended into a shooting.

The alleged triggerman handed himself in to police later the same day.
