Chippa fail to get Steve as coach

2014-06-06 00:00

AFTER what has been an uncertain few weeks for Maritzburg United, there was good news yesterday when it was confirmed that Chippa United have appointed Yugoslavian Kosta Papic as their head coach for the 2014/15 campaign.

The announcement finally ends speculation that United boss Steve Komphela was on his way to the newly promoted Chippa. Komphela had been mum on the story since it first broke, but his agent Tim Sukazi, Chippa and Maritzburg all confirmed that a lucrative offer had been made and that Komphela was in the negotiation stages with Chippa.

Maritzburg have countered Chippa’s offer by offering Komphela an improved deal, but the club’s commercial manager Younus Kadodia told The Witness yesterday that that deal still needed to be finalised.

“We have always maintained that Steve is our coach,” he said.

“I can not confirm with 100% certainty that he will be our coach next season, but we are hoping that things will run smoothly from here.

“We are hoping to have the matter resolved in the next two or three days.”

Kadodia added that Komphela had been in contact with the club in recent days. Sukazi, meanwhile, is currently out of the country and talks between him and the club would resume upon his return.
