Christmas lights to come down at last — next week

2015-01-29 00:00

HAVE you been wondering when the bright Christmas lights on Chief Albert Luthuli Street are coming down?

Well, wonder no more. The city yesterday resolved to take down the festive lights by next week.

While offering no explanation on why the lights were still burning bright while the rest of the city goes dark due to load shedding, acting municipal manager Nelisiwe Ngcobo gave the city a pat on the back for installing the new brighter festive lights.

Senior Exco councillor Bill Lambert said that while the bright lights were attractive on the eye, it was time they came down. “It is well over Christmas now and we are heading towards the end of January and the lights are still up,” he said.

Speaking at a full council meeting at city hall yesterday, Ngcobo said the municipality will take down the lights in a week’s time.

She hastened to add though that the city received a positive response from the public about the installation of the new lights in front of the city hall.

“The festive lights went viral, and the experience was shared on social media communication and social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

“In future, the installation of festive lighting will be extended to other areas around the city,” said Ngcobo.
