Christmas party: Cops seek donations illegally

2008-12-07 00:00

An investigation is to be launched after a midlands police station staff asked residents for donations towards their Christmas party.

The Cramond SAPS requested farmers and businesses in the area to make donations towards a party at the station on Friday in a letter written on an SAPS letterhead, and penned on Tuesday last week.

The letter states that the “Cramond SAPS plans to have their year-ending function on Friday, December 12, at the station. This office would like to request any form of donation from your company or business. Your contribution will be highly appreciated.” The letter has a signature alleged to be that of the station commissioner.

SAPS spokeswoman Inspector Joey Jeevan said public donations are authorised only by the provincial commissioner. “Proper authorisation from the provincial commissioner’s office was not obtained. Therefore an investigation will be carried out and appropriate action will be taken against those responsible,” said Jeevan.
