Church street: two shops completely destroyed in fire

2009-12-08 00:00

TWO neighbouring shops in the CBD were gutted by fire in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Captain Alex, a fish-and-chips shop, and a Chinese-owned shop next to it, both in Church Street across the road from the Bessie Head municipal library, were completely destroyed by the fire that is thought to have resulted from an electric fault.

Police spokeswoman Inspector Joey Jeevan said it is not known how the fire started.

“Police and firefighters were called to the scene and there wasn’t much left of the equipment and the building itself is in bad shape,” Jeevan said.

It is believed that the fire started in the Chinese-owned shop at about 2 am before the take-away shop caught fire.

Forensic experts from Pretoria were called in to investigate the cause of the fire.

Take-away shop owner Frank Shen said he was called to the building at about 2.23 am on Saturday.

He said nothing was saved from the fire. “I can’t tell how much the damage will cost but the shops are completely destroyed. At this stage the matter is under police investigation and I will have figures after the police have done their part,” Shen said.
