Church women in action: new group to launch

2008-08-26 00:00

A new church women’s group is to be launched in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, August 31, with a march and ecumenical service to mark the culmination of Women’s Month.

Participants, both women and men, will march from the city hall to the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Nativity in Langalibalele Street to launch Sofia (Sisters of Faith in Action).

Dr Sarojini Nadar, director of the Programme on Gender and Religion in the School of Religion and Theology at UKZN, said Sofia is a gathering of theologians and women in the ministry who “want to remind the church that it belongs to women too”.

“We also want to reclaim Women’s Month … It is not about buying women lingerie and dishwashers, as nice as that may be. We want to remind society that Women’s Day has a political and liberating message, and reclaim it for that.”

Sofia’s name is a play on the word Sophia, the Greek term for wisdom, which is used to describe the feminine aspect of God.

The march will leave the city hall at 1 pm on Sunday. For information, contact Kelly Stuart, telephone 033 345 4819 or e-mail kstuart@kzncc.org.za.
