Chute crash: jumper has hard landing

2013-02-25 00:00

A WOMAN was seriously injured on Saturday after her parachute began to spin and she hit the ground hard.

School teacher Mariëtte Loubser (25) was doing her second static line jump from 3 600 feet at the Johannesburg Skydiving Club (JSC).

Club chair Eugene Potgieter said: “She made a good jump from the plane. After her chute opened, it started to spin.”

Loubser suffered a punctured lung, eight broken ribs, a broken pelvis (in two places), a cracked leg bone, cracked vertebrae and bleeding on the brain.

Potgieter said Loubser’s helmet had a two-way radio, which the safety officer used to talk her repeatedly through the safety procedures.

Chief instructor Kevin Owen said he doesn’t know why she didn’t follow the instructions.

“We don’t let anyone jump if they don’t demonstrate on the ground that they know how to carry out the emergency procedures,” he said.
